News From Nell...
Hope your summer has been going as well as possible during these challenging times.
Our summer has brought puppy-raising, lots of cooking camps, a short trip to Big Bear lake, and tie-dyeing.
Speaking of the joy of playing in the sand, I was honored and thrilled to see DOWN UNDER THE PIER reviewed on the Celebrate Picture Books blog, and even happier to see the instructions to make kinetic sand for an at-home play activity. Great way to bring a bit of the beach home!
SUPPORT OTHER 2020 DEBUT PICTURE BOOKS
Please support my fellow authors who released new picture books this year! EVIE'S FIELD DAY (Cardinal Rule Press) by Claire Annette Noland and illustrated by Alicia Teba, is about a plucky girl who has some challenges to face during her school's field day. Kirkus reviews says, "A lively read-aloud promoting the virtues of sportsmanship."
I'm a huge fan of everyone exploring their own creativity for fun and personal enrichment. In the beginning of the pandemic, I was lucky enough to discover a virtual watercolor workshop that brought a lot of joy to those early scary times.
Taught by Faith Evans-Sills and my fellow Cameron Kids illustrator, Mati Rose McDonough, this course is incredibly fun and accessible, and eased me into making watercolor art I kind of couldn't believe I was making!
They are offering a FREE 'Wonderful Watercolor Reset: 4 Day Challenge" starting August 25 and if you like that, you can sign up for the longer course starting on August 31. There are no "live" classes, so you can work it into your schedule, but there is still a great and supportive community that shares and comments on all your art (if you wish!) I have no affiliation, just a very happy student!
Thank you again to everyone who ordered signed copies of DOWN UNDER THE PIER from Children's Book World. You helped support a beloved local indie bookstore that we would be lost without.
I had the unexpected surprise of being treated like a "real" author (gasp!) when I arrived at the store to find all the books set up for me to sign. Sharon, the owner of the store, was kind enough to document the occasion. If you want your own copy or to send as a gift, click the blue button below.
I loved seeing PIER on the VIP "New Releases" shelf that I have perused myself so many times. I am so grateful to Children's Book World for allowing me in to the store to experience this milestone achievement.
What could make this trip any more special? Seeing all the DONATED copies purchased to go to The Book Foundation, a local non-profit that works tirelessly to get new books into the hands of kids who would not have them otherwise. Studies show that owning books boosts reading levels, helping to close the achievement gap--even more crucial in this time when schools and libraries are closed.
Thank you to Julia M, Raquel G, Erica G, Sarah G, Henry G, Kelly M, Charlotte O, Tracy P, Erica R, Rachel W, Jennifer W, Stacy E, Leigh T, Nick C, and Jon B for your donation!
You can purchase a copy to donate from Children's Book World, or from The Book Foundation's official Amazon wish list (and maybe help them out with their other requests!) If you do this please let me know so I can thank you!
I signed them all and am told I may get a peek at their distribution!
