Lyrical and Structural Revising: A Down Under the Pier Case Study
When trying to think of my own journey and what might help yours, what I wanted to share most was a transformational editorial letter from freelance editor Deborah Halverson, which taught me so much about lyricism and structure.
In this class, Deborah and I will break down this letter, discussing how the manuscript evolved from a messy in-class writing prompt I did in my first picture book writing class, to gaining me an agent and becoming my first published book. I learned SO much during this time.
Next I will share feedback from Victoria Wells Arms, the agent who signed me, the editor passes for our submission, and some of the changes to the final text from the editor who acquired the story at Cameron Kids, Amy Novesky.
We will also demystify the process of working with a freelance editor like Deborah.
While I can't tell you how to write, I hope sharing all the stages of revision will spark inspiration for your own writing!
As a 10-year veteran children's editor at Harcourt, with another 20 years freelance editing, Deborah Halverson has helped many writers hone their stories to become marketable.

What students are sayingReally seeing the process of editing - yowza! |
I love that this dove deep into the process of revision on one particular text. I have never attended a workshop that offered this. |
Gave a bird’s eye view to editing that was invaluable. |
